my event blocks don’t have fade handles up on the upper corners. I tried Prefs/audio/settings… still not there… where are they??

Make sure you are using Audio Events, not Audio Parts, please. Audio Parts don’t have the Fade In/Out controllers.

If you double click on it and Sample Editor opens, then it’s Audio Event. If Audio Parts Editor opens, then it’s an Audio Part. To make an Audio Event from Audio Part, select it and Bounce Selection.
why would my Cubase have made a part…I don’t recall ever asking it to…? How do you bounce??

Maybe your glued two audio events to one?
It’s in the Audio menu > Bounce Selection.
