Wavelab Pro 9.5.5 Closes unexpectedly for no reason

Loving the latest update for Wavelab Pro 9, however I’m continually experiencing the program crash and disappear without warning in the middle of a session.

Firstly, I had some previous problems with the application opening various instances of itself on open, as well as the application becoming stuck in the dock and not wanting to quit without forcing, but narrowed that down to the ‘lock plugin’ setting being turned on, which has since been resolved in the latest update.

Since then, I’ve tried closing specific applications running in the background (i.e. Dropbox for some reason was hogging a lot of CPU which I thought might be causing an issue) as well as limiting myself to using just one screen monitor and docking/hiding all analysers when not needed to see if it’s a visual performance issue or something, but still, the program just keeps quitting randomly with no obvious time pattern or when I’m using a particular processor/plugin etc.

My current work-around is to create automated back ups at 5min intervals, and I’m in the habit of saving after literally every parameter move, but it’s not healthy to keep that up!

Haven’t managed to grab a crash report yet (will do next time I’m in a session), and I’m sure it’s more likely something to do with my system or settings, but perhaps the forum gods can bestow some light on my situation as others may be experiencing similar difficulties?

Specs:
Wavelab Pro 9.5.5
Motu 4 Pre Interface (Firewire connection. Latest firmware.)
Macbook Pro Mid 2012 (2.5Ghz Intel Core i5. 8 Gig Ram. SSD)
MacOS Sierra 10.12.6

Many thanks in advance for any advice offered by users and admin, and hopefully that’s enough info to go on for now.

Best
J.

Latest crash report, Wavelab just crashed on me again while working in a session.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I am not running WL on OSX but the line

/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/SeratoVirtualAudioPlugIn.plugin/Contents/MacOS/SeratoVirtualAudioPlugIn: mach-o, but wrong architecture

looks ominous? Serarto has had some acknowledged issues with some MacBook Pros like this one:

But crash report analysis is above my pay grade.

Thanks for your reply Paul, much appreciated.

I looked a bit further into the “SeratoVirtualAudioPlugin” and found that it may be related to Serato Bridge (which I don’t have or use), so I’ve zipped the plugin and removed it from the Plugin Folder (same for the DVCPROHDAudio).

Interestingly it appears the issue pointed out in your link is related to the touch-bar version of the Macbook pros, which I don’t have, and I can’t recall ever having issues with Serato, so I’m hoping that the Plugins pointed out in the report are related to the issues with Wavelab.

Will see if any further crashes happen over the coming week and post any further updates or reports.

Many thanks.

Latest Crash report “Segmentation fault: 11” is what turned up.

Found this during a quick search, but is obviously referring to another application so may not even be relevant/related:

“The segmentation fault is caused by an application attempting to access restricted memory space, and the operating system stopping this attempt.”
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8217579

Along that logic, I would assume Wavelab keeps crashing as my system is trying to access memory beyond it’s limits (either system and/or app) to perform processing tasks.

I’ve re-created the fault with both low & high audio buffer size settings, and also tried disengaging/swapping out various plugins.
My Processing Precision settings are: Plug-in Processing 64bit float. Temporary files 32bit Float, but not sure if that has any affect on the issue.

Activity Monitor shows only 5.5 gig of memory use (out of 8gig available), CPU on the other hand for Wavelab is getting upwards of 120-130% at times, especially with the Plugin window open, so it’s looking more like a CPU performance issue, then a Memory/RAM issue?

Any thoughts on the above would be much appreciated.
J.

Hi …

This maybe suggests that there are two identical versions of many plug ins your VST folder - Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/ ? And WL is trying to determine which one to use maybe?

If there is, what happens if you remove one of them?

Again … crash report analysis is above my pay grade.

Thanks again for your analysis.

So strange.

I’ve double checked both VST and VST3 folders and there are definitely no duplicate files/plugins in either.
There’s obviously the ‘Mix’ and ‘Master’ versions of some plugins (i.e. Dangerous BAX EQ Master.vst3 + Dangerous BAX EQ Mix.vst3 etc), but can’t imagine that would be causing any issues?

I removed the ‘Additional VST Plug-in Folders’ individual folder links (under ‘Plug-ins/General’ tab), with ‘Search Standard Shared VST Plug-in Folders’ selected, and ran a new session with ‘Force Plug-in Detection’, but the report is still showing the above on Session/Montage load. (I thought maybe the Plugin folders were being scanned twice, hence the dual loading)

At some point during a session Wavelab inevitably crashes and then logs the ‘Segmentation fault: 11’.

Don’t suppose there’s anyway to check if Wavelab has any restrictions/limits set in terms of CPU and Memory allocation on MacOS?

Hmmm I’d need to look at that because … as I mentioned … I’m not running WL on OSX. But we have a few macs and I would expect the answer to that to be ‘no’.

That’s an uncommonly high CPU load you’re experiencing there for processing a stereo track with a couple of plugins.

There’s a basic Steinberg ‘things to look at guide’ for high CPU usage issues here:

https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-us/articles/206116964-Optimizing-Mac-OS-X-for-DAWs

Thanks Paul, looked through the link you supplied and went through what I could, but unfortunately haven’t uncovered anything obvious that’s related to my system.

To be fair, my plugin chain consists of 8 plugins (used specifically as Clip Effects on each track, as well as some additional (x3) metering/dither plugins on the Master Section used as needed). All other Wavelab meters are hidden except Loudness Meter, Level Meter, and Scope.

From what I understand about how Wavelab handles processing (please correct me if I’m wrong), Wavelab only processes plugins on the selected/active clip i.e. working across an album of 10 tracks (each with the same clip effects ‘chain’) clip effect plugins are only active/processed on the selected clip during playback. (Opposed to a traditional DAW where any insert processing applied to multiple tracks would be processed collectively on playback). [Apologise if my explanation here is sub-par]. So in theory x8 ‘active’ plugins + Master section plugins wouldn’t be excessive in my opinion, but it’s possible I’ve misinterpreted something here.

I also haven’t experienced or noticed any particularly obvious signs of distress which would normally allude to an issue i.e. no mouse latency issues, meters/plugins responding as expected etc, and crashes occur regardless of what sample rate I’m working in (majority of sessions are 96k or 48k).

I use a very healthy dose of plugins during mix/production sessions in other DAW’s and don’t have any issues with processing, playback or recording (not at all a dig; I’m an advocate of the Montage!), but I’ll literally be fine tuning/adjusting a particular plugin, muting a plugin, or adjusting clip automation etc etc and then Wavelab will just plain close on me, with no audible lagging/glitching, no screen stuttering/freezing, just ‘pooft’, gone.

I’ve been reluctant to upgrade to the latest Mojave OSX as I still have some applications (mainly old Logic Pro 9 Sessions) that won’t work in the latest version (I’m still on Sierra 10.12.6) which may or may not be contributing to the issue? But I would be prepared to upgrade in order to rule that out.

Anyways, appreciate your time mate, I’ll keep slugging away at it.
