external synth audio into Cubase via UR824 fx - good??

Hi, what is the best way to avoid any v occasional clipping in Cubase 10 of the input of the audio in from an external synth via UR824 interface? I read someone suggesting going through the UR’s fx strip’s compressor. Presume this is after the D/A conversion so the damage is already done. I was attempting to try this out but there is no UR FX hardware showing for my synth channel in the mixer. It does show for the mike input channel. Maybe I’d need to define a regular input bus rather than an external instrument bus for this to show. Generally is there an advantage of using the UR compression over the cubase channel strip compression - at the time of recording. Bit new to this so be grateful of your wisdom. Many thanks, Simon
