Nuendo at Lakewood Church

The weekly services of the Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas are media spectaculars. The church services take place at a former basketball arena which has been converted to offer capacity for up to 16 000 visitors. The 200-member choir provides musical support during the services and is accompanied by a big band. The band take their place on a special hydraulically powered orchestra pit that has been designed specifically for the purpose. The audience can follow the events on stage not only on the large LED screens within the arena itself but, through both TV ad internet live stream broadcast, also in the comfort of their own homes.

The technical crew at Lakewood relies daily on Steinberg’s Nuendo to handle the range of audio tasks required day in, day out. The main hardware components are four Euphonix consoles, a System 5-B for live mixing, a Max Air at the monitoring position and two System 5-BPs for On Air and Audio Post production. The FOH and Control Rooms are each equipped with a 112-channel Nuendo system that serves as the central recorder/player, and is integrated into the Euphonix consoles over MADI interfaces. The orchestra pit alone provides 64 channels of audio to the impressive outboard rack located in the Monitor Room, itself situated in a special area under the choir stage.
Steinberg talked to Reed Hall, Lakewood’s Director of Audio and Technical Production, and Brian Tankersley, Director of Audio Technologies, about their work with Nuendo during the weekly audio productions for these outstanding church services.
