Fernand Bos and Nuendo: audio post editing on The Pink Panther 2

Fernand Bos is one of the most in demand audio editors with a huge amount of experience working on Hollywood-movies. His references include successful films like Cold Mountain, The Ladykillers and We Are Marshall. Currently he’s working on The Pink Panther 2 which will be released in 2009. We had the chance to talk with Fernand about his career and why Nuendo is his post production software of choice.

Hello Fernand! Could you give us a short introduction - what's your background and what  have been the most important projects you've worked on up to now?
I was born in The Netherlands where I played bass and attended the Music Conservatory in Utrecht. It was the 80’s and I had already had my first contact with Steinberg software at that time - it was the Steinberg Pro24. In 1989 I moved to Los Angeles to study bass at Musicians Institute and after graduation started working as a studio musician in the entertainment industry. I can’t remember looking back what the exact genesis was of my career as a music editor, but I’ve been working as one for over 12 years with directors such as The Coen Brothers, Anthony Minghella, The Farrely Brothers and Christopher Guest. Some of my most important projects include Cold Mountain, A Mighty Wind, The Ladykillers, Under The Tuscan Sun, and We Are Marshall.

What are the most important projects you’ve done with Nuendo?
I started using Nuendo on ‘We are Marshall’ and have since used the software on ‘Charlie Bartlett’, ‘The Heartbreak Kid’, The Dark Is Rising’, and ‘Walk Hard’ for which I was recently nominated for a MPSE Golden Reel Award.

Which role does Nuendo play in your daily production process?
Nuendo is my primary edit and mix application. I have several setups in which I use Nuendo. At my studio, I edit and premix with Nuendo and my Euphonix MC controller. My portable setup based on a MacBook Pro with Apogee hardware

Which features are the most interesting to you?
The networking features of Nuendo are great. I use two separate systems on the dubstage with one playing back 56 outputs into the console and the other with a stereo headphone mix for editing. With Nuendo I can send my changes to the playback rig with the touch of only one button. Feature films are broken down into multiple reels so the ability to have all these reels open at the same time and drag and drop audio from one reel to another is a very big timesaver. Folder tracks are very helpful as well since my track count often exceeds 100 tracks. The audio editing features surpass those of competing applications and the program is so much faster and intuitive. The fact that one application can run in countless different configurations is a big plus as well.

What projects have you got lined up for the future?
I am currently working on ‘The Pink Panther 2’ in which Steve Martin again plays inspector Jacques Clouseau. Nuendo is the application of choice from the first temp mix until the final printmaster!
